Air Source Heating

Air Source Heating Installation in Lancaster: Efficient Heat from the Air

Air Source Heating is one of the most versatile and accessible renewable technologies available today. An Air Source Heat Pump allows you to efficiently heat your home and provide hot water using the freely available thermal energy absorbed from the air around you. As MCS Accredited installers, Wheildons provides expert design and installation of air source heating systems suitable for a wide range of properties in the Lancaster area.

The pump works by extracting heat from the outside air in a similar way that a refrigerator extracts heat from its interior. Crucially, the system remains effective even when external temperatures are significantly low—our systems are designed to extract sufficient heat even if the temperature drops to -15°C. While heat pumps require electricity to run the compressor, the majority of the heat they deliver is extracted from the ambient air, making them highly efficient and much cleaner than burning fossil fuels directly.

Distribution Methods: Air-to-Water vs. Air-to-Air

We offer two main types of Air Source Heat Pump systems to meet your property’s specific needs:

  1. Air-to-Water Systems: This is the most common setup for the North West. The extracted heat is transferred into a fluid which then circulates through your wet central heating system. This heat can be used to heat radiators (larger ones are recommended for efficiency), underfloor heating systems, and domestic hot water.
  2. Air-to-Air Systems: These systems produce warm air which is circulated directly by fans to heat your home. While effective for space heating, these models typically do not provide hot water.

Because heat pumps operate optimally by delivering heat at lower temperatures over longer periods, they perform exceptionally well when paired with low-temperature emitters like Underfloor Heating. This combination ensures maximum efficiency and the highest level of comfort.

Suitability and Installation Requirements

Air Source Heat Pump systems are generally easier to install than Ground Source Heat Pumps, as they require no trenches or drilling. However, for maximum effectiveness, several key factors must be considered:

  • Property Insulation: Air Source Heat Pumps perform best when a home is thoroughly insulated and draught proofed. Since they produce heat at a lower temperature than traditional boilers, excellent insulation is vital for the heating system to remain effective and efficient throughout the coldest months.
  • Placement: The external unit needs a place outside your home—either fitted to a wall or placed on the ground—with plenty of clear space around it to ensure a good flow of air.
  • Replacement Fuel: The economic benefits are greatest if the air source heat pump system is replacing an expensive fuel source such as electricity, oil, or coal.

Air Source Heat Pumps require minimal maintenance, making them a true ‘fit and forget’ technology. They eliminate the need for fuel deliveries and are designed to provide both heating and hot water (Air-to-Water models) reliably.
